My computer responds to a click 2 to 5 seconds late.?

Hi i got a dell inspiron with 256megs of ram and xp installed when i click or double click any icon or button it takes my comp 2 to 5 seconds to react . this problem starts after my comp has been running for an hour or so. I have cleaned up the registry reinstalled xp and removed all spyware and got norton antivirus 2005 updated regularly. this is really annoying to have to wait that long for a brand new pc to react. I'm desperate , does anybody have any ideas? a reformat is out of question. Also when i scroll a page up and down the page gets stuck for a few seconds and this is repeated every 5 seconds but once i have managed to scroll down to the bottom of the page everything is normal again.( i mean the scrolling).

possiblity 1: your antivirus is scanning each click. set it to a less paranoid setting.

possiblity 2: your mouse is malfunctioning. this is almost always the case in wireless mice, usb mice, or universal keyboards. if possible, buy a usb to ps/2 converter and plug the non-wireless mouse into that port.

possiblility 3: there is a driver conflict or your driver got corrupted. first, remove all mouse drivers, reboot, and then let windows install the generic driver. if this doesn't work, install the "offical" driver.

Go to your mouse settings and check to see how fast or slow the double click speed is set.

Hope this helps.

Good Luck.
It's probably something with the BIOS. Perhaps you FSB(front side Bus) frequncy is too low. Restart yo machine and when it prompt u to press F10 or del (or whatever it is) to enter setup check out the FSB freq. It should be somewhere between 800Mhz. Also make sure PCI Bus mastering is enabled......It saves lives
