I am a casual gamer and My build for the custom PC I am building at Directron.com is:
Processor: Intel E4300 Core 2 Duo 1.80GHz processor with dual-core technology, 800FSB, 2MB L2 shared cache, and cooling fan.
Memory: One Corsair Value Select 2GB 2x1GB DDR2 533 Memory VS2GBKIT533D2
Motherboard: Biostar P4M890-M7 mATX motherboard with VIA P4M890 chipset.
Video: Not Sure.
Audio: onboard 8-channel audio.
Storage: One Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 320GB HDD ST3320620AS.
Optical: CD-RW/DVD combo drive.
Case: AMS CF-1829 ATX mid-tower case with 300W power supply.
Antivirus Software: CA eTrust PestPatrol 2005 Anti-Spyware r5 OEM

1) Nvidia 6800 ultra
2) ATI radeon X800XT

I have heard bad things about the GeForce 8500. I would recommend going up to a 8600. The 8800 is way more than you should have in this system though.
Just be sure it supports GLI advanced shaders up to 1.5
after that the most important spec is triangles/sec
RENDERING speed
Lastly you would want at least 512 m/b memory minimum
anything else in memory may be nice
for AutoCAD or 3DS Studio Max rendering
but for games wont really make a difference
