definitely once a week is fine, just open your anti virus and schedule a scan for once a week at a time when you know you will be on your computer... but don't be afraid to do a scan yourself if you suspect a virus due to the way your PC is acting...

keep all enabled including auto update.Once every two weeks scan manually.Don't go to sex sites,don't open attachments if it is not necessary.
check your settings/preferences. By default it should automatically do it once a week.
You can set it to check all the time.
